My third year track (or how this blog may become a tale of surviving surgery first)

So, I mentioned before that our medical school has a lottery for our third year core clerkship rotations.  Wednesday, we got the results back, and now I have my track, the order which is as follows:

Or yes, I did end up with surgery first.

Well, ok yes, a little bit, but honestly, I’m not super upset about surgery first.  This track was the one I had ranked 4th: apparently 73% of the class got a top 3 pick, so I guess I was in the 27% that didn’t, but given that 2 classmates got their last choice it could have been so much worse.  My criteria for track selection was pretty simple:

  1. I wanted OBS (my biggest interest) to be in the middle: early enough that I have time to appropriately plan my electives for 4th year, and late enough that I’ll have more experience to get a better reference letter.
  2. I didn’t want family first. We do our family rotation in a rural location, and I didn’t want to come back and then immediately have to leave for 2 months again.
  3. I wanted Internal first, to get it out of the way, and because everyone had said that internal is a great one because it helps with all the other tracks.

As such, with this track, I really got 2/3 of my wishes, and the 3rd point can also apply to surgery. I think it will be good to do surgery first, as they’ve mentioned they are kinder on us in the first rotation, and it will also be a good one to get over with first, and will help others.  Another benefit of this track is that I won’t have an exam right after the Christmas break (as my preferred track would have), and that it also spread out the 3 most intense rotations in terms of call (surgery, OBS and internal), which I think is going to be a huge benefit.  I also have a great group of classmates on my track, though honestly I’ve got a great class, so all the groups were going to be great 🙂

So, yes, it wasn’t the track I’d wanted, but I definitely can live with it, and even like it.  Honestly, knowing myself, I imagine that by the end of next year I’ll be preaching how fantastic my track is to the 2019’s 😉

And as an added bonus, I’ll have the opportunity to show off my ever expanding scrub cap collection! 😉

    • That’s a good point I’d never thought of 🙂 I’m not sure when you guys take Step 2 – we only have the one qualifying licensing exam in 4th year – but yeah, having it closer to that probably won’t hurt!

    • Yes, I’ve come around to it 🙂 It’s actually a little bit late for me re OBs and planning my electives after all, but I’ve come to like it 🙂 Hope you get what you want for yours!
